Description

Object composed of a metal (silver coloured) medallion. There is a clasp made from the same metal that joins the medal and the ribbon. One side of the medal has an uncrowned silhouette of George VI. An inscription circles the profile that reads / GEORGIVS VI D : G : BR : OMN : REX : F : D : IND : IMP. The opposite side of the medal depicts an oak tree, with two lions either side of the tree with the dates '1939' and ' 1945'. Underneath this depiction is the inscription THE DEFENCE MEDAL. The medal is attached to a ribbon with vertical stripes of navy , green and orange. The outer edge of the medal has an engraving of the recipients name / NX72397 E BENFIELD /
