Description

DITTY BOX - item of a sailor's kit to hold small personal belongings such as letters, pen, ink, paper, cards, photos, etc. January 1915 this Ditty Box was issued to George French, 4464 on the RAN Training Ship "Tingira" and was used by him throughout his service. November 1915 Sailded in Troop Ship "Ceramic" from Melbourne as one of a draft of 100 boys to Australian ships serving overseas. January 1916 joined HMAS Melbourne at Bermuda for service in the West Indis Squadron. June 1916 handed over the W1 Station to the French Navy and joined the British Grand Fleet at Scapa Flow. HMA ships Melbourne and Syndney joined the 2nd Light Cruiser Squadron as replacements for loss in the Battle of Jutland. (HMAS Australia was Flag ship of the 2nd Battle Cruiser Squadron). Served with Grand Fleet of remainder of hostilities and in 1919 gathered up the 6 Australian River Class Destroyers in the Mediterranean for passage back to Australia. Service terminated in 1925."
