Medal with portrait of George V on the obverse and an image of St George on horseback trampling underfoot the eagle shield of the Central Powers and a skull and cross - bones ; The risen sun is above these figures and the years 1914 and 1918 are written along the outside edge ; The rank and name of the recipient engraved on the rim ; The ribbon has a large , central orange stripe , flanked by a white stripe on either side , flanked by a black stripe , flanked by a light blue stripe ( Department of Defence , 2011 )
